Disc Golf Course

The Origin of Concept
I love nature. Given the choice, I’d much rather be outside than in. I also love the game of disc golf. In large part because it’s played (mostly) in the woods. For the better part of the past 25 years, I’ve also been creative problem solver and screenprinted-poster enthusiast. In 2020, I had a chance to align my skills and passions into a personal project that combined all of my interests.
When it comes to posters, I prefer the screen-printed variety because of their unique design and printing requirements and limitations. When you see a successful screenprinted poster, it means a lot of thought, labor, and love went into its creation.
The Magic Ingredients
Each poster in this series depicts a specific disc golf course hole, along with other unique elements that may inhabit the area.
My goal isn’t to copy reality–cameras already do that. Instead, I seek to capture the spirit and mood of a location, in my particular style and point of view. But that’s not all.
Even though these are technically disc golf posters, the animals are the subtle stars of the show. Their interactions with and juxtapositions to human-made elements are what I find most interesting and fun about creating each poster. I leave human bodies out on purpose because nature is most important here. And flying discs already give the impression of human involvement.
Eagles & Turtles, & Squirrels, Oh My!
The courses I create posters for are all beautiful in their own right. But to be honest, without context, it can sometimes be difficult to tell one from another. Some have unmistakably-unique features, like Kit Carson Disc Golf Course in Escondido, California (see poster, below). But for those that are more “au naturel”, I dig a little deeper to learn about native flora, fauna, and local history.
For instance, Kaposia Park in South St. Paul, Minnesota sits very close to the Mississippi river where a large convocation of Bald eagles reside. So the eagles naturally fly over and around the disc golf course.
Coincidentally, an “eagle” in disc golf terms means completing a hole in two strokes under par–a relatively rare and impressive feat. Even for an eagle.

The Creative Process
It’s preferable to visit and play a course prior to creating a poster for it, but not always necessary or realistic if too far to travel. These days, with video drones, Google, and YouTube, I can learn about and be up close to a course without physically being there.
So after extensive research, I sketch concepts and refine them into a final, digital vector image; the ideal format for screenprinting.
The Printing Process
Next, the digital color layers are printed on separate, clear acetate films. The images on the films are then transfered to tightly-woven metal screens with the help of chemicals and intense light.
From there, earth-friendly, water-based inks are hand mixed and each color is pressed through a corresponding screen onto the awaiting paper, in perfect alignment to produce the final layered art.
That’s just a quick overview of the printing process, of course. Overall, the craft of screen printing is really an artform unto itself.
All the posters in this series have been printed by Screen Door Studio in Madison, Wisconsin.

The Specs
Each poster contains a similar, outer template so the entire series maintains a cohesive look and feel, while the center illustration and copy is unique to each course hole. Ink and paper colors are chosen, based on the illustration direction and content.
All posters in this series are printed 18” x 24” (portrait) in two or three colors on French 100 lb. uncoated cover stock. They’re then trimmed to size from the press sheet, hand numbered, and ready for sale. “First Run” printings are labeled as such.
The Goal
The attention and support for this project has been tremendous. To date, 24 posters have been created for 17 different courses across the United States, from California to North Carolina. And more are in the works.
The goal is to create at least one poster for at least one course in every state, as well as other special courses throughout the world. But with over 9,000 courses in the U.S. already, and new ones being built every month, it’s not a realistic pursuit. But it won’t stop me from trying!
